world cup diary...

Fought hard against my soporific instincts to stay awake and watch the Brazil-Croatia no Croatia-Brazil match last night. Was a dud!! really! expected 'some' fireworks and saw none (the goal by Kaka although comes close to being classified in that category)
The detractors (very few of them actually) rightly pointed out that Brazil looked dull and slow. Personally, their passing was ridiculous.. hardly any passes beyond ten feet range.. They moved forward in a group, which is good provided you ultimately reach the net.. But they were stopped well-before courtesy the brilliant marking by the Croatian defenders...
Had the ball found its way into the Brazilian net by the header which missed by a fraction a 1-1 scoreline, with Ronaldo being passe' and Ronaldinho out-of-touch, the match would have been brilliant to watch...
Some other time maybe

PS: The restaring of ESPN-Star services by ICC on the eve of the inauguration came as a sweet shocker. I, like many other Puneites was deciding on shifting to DishTV... Alls well that begins well :)

i know u played decent amount of football in school, i did tht too. but of late, hasn't there been a football fad, especially in pune; where almost everyone 'shows' himself to be a football fan.
i know several ppl who may have not touched a football ever in their life, and now follow EPL and their likes, just because it's the IN thing.

Actually Pratik, it's more to do with the coverage. Almost everytime u switch on the TV u'll find football on it. Once people start watching the game, they tend to like it more. I am pretty sure thats one of the main reasons for footballs increasing popularity in the metros.

let me tell u...i got dishtv just a day b4 the world cup...!!!!
nyways...brazil have to be much better if they want to defend their title...Argentina are lurking out there

@pratik - yes, we played decent football in school, not as good as bardya :) and i agree with the football-fan thing.. its a new-found love. guess its the-in thing and to be a part of discussions and talks u hv to be aware of what is going on

@pethe - the hype over the world-cup is a living example of what u say... every goddamn news channel devotes atleast 3 hrs a day for it and that too prime-time

@bardya - as per what we've witnessed till date, argentina are way ahead.. but i somehow feel brazil will (are) bouncing back

@all the above - zaki...tnx ;)
and yes...we play football every sunday. we played 3-4 times a week b4 every1 got busy with their work and stuff. but we've been playing football like this for the past 4-5 years...and we have been the only ones around. but yesterday there were as many as 60 people in 3 different groups playing football on the same field...reminded me of our school days...and many were in 'kits'...for no reason...shin pads and all....it IS the IN thing..and i can bet that no1 will be playing after 9th of July 2006
