mE Maharashtrian

Almost the whole of Maharashtra is gathering behind Pratibha tai as she gears to don the role of the First Citizen of India. I too feel proud that a Maharashtrian will, after 60 years, get to the top most position of the country [1]. With the Sena choosing regionalism over Hindutva, her victory is almost certain.
However, in our joy we have conveniently forgotten that Shivraj Patil and Sushilkumar Shinde were no less [2] Maharashtrians. So what if she lacks the charisma a President is expected to have [3]. Mrs. G, has played her cards very well again - there was no way the woman-factor could be ignored by the coalition partners. And lo .. we are set to have the first woman Rashtrapati (? patni :D)
A historic moment for Maharashtra .. Hadn't other Maharashtrian big leaders screwed up their chances, we would have in the past had a Maharashtrian Prime Minister too (we know who we are talking of)
Jai Maharashtra!

[1] - The numbers indicate that it is a foregone conclusion that she will win.
[2] - Pratibha Patil is actually Pratibha Patil-Shekhawat, her husband not being a Maharashtrian
[3] - Looking back at the Indian Presidents I can remember, is that even a factor to consider?

I think from what i have read in newspapers that, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has more chance than what most think. He has a lot of friends across party lines like sharad pawar and in the left too. But yet Patil tai has the edge. Although she is maharashtrian she has rajasthani roots and married to one too. Also for a maharashtrian PM Sharad Pawar still has a chance.
Also a previous Mrs.G too had her own president in rashtrapati bhavan during the emergency.

@pat - yes, i read abt his friends too, but didnt know pawar was one of them. from what i have read, some members from the 3rd front like SP, TDP are contemplating voting for the 'secular option' rather than boycotting it altogether
i dont think the non-congress parties are strong enough to have their PM, unless we have a hung assembly which is very unlikely - so pawar's chance will remain just a chance .. had he not run away from congress, maybe he would have had a chance

& in [2] - i did mention abt the non-maharashtrian thhing

yeah actually u did say about the shekhawat thing. And when I said that pawar coul d become the next PM i meant the next lok sabha elections. that wll probably be his last chance, and he his making friends in other parties including laloo and the bjp. during the recent pune municipal corp elections, bjp and ncp formed post poll alliance to remove the congress, kumar ketkar, editor of lok sabha said in IE that this could be replicated nationally. in all likely hood pawar will keep the option of joining the NDA or sticking to the UPA open till the last min.

yes - he is well-known for not being loyal to a cause or ideology - i think its going to be ncp-shiv sena in the state for sure the next time around, abt the national scene, i dont think he will go with the NDA, and even if he does the BJP wouldnt let go off the PM post. We live in a quasi 2 party system & a PM in india can only be from Congress or BJP

yeah i agree with the quasi two party system in india, and that most probably PM will be from BJP or congress.
however i think it will be bjp-shiv sena-ncp or bjp-ncp in maharashtra.
